This is a Nippon Open Top Hatpin Holder/Vase. It is beautifully decorated with Cobalt Blue around the top part, with (2) decorated medallions with fancy scrolls, tear drops and handpainted pink to burgundy Roses,green leaves, and shadowed pale blue leaves trailing off in the center. It also has gold decorated comas with a scroll and a tear drop with a pinkish burgundy Rose, green leaves with shadowed pale blue leaves trailing off. It has 2 bands of gold on the bottom part with a pale yellow in between and has gold on the scalloped top with gold decoration. It is marked on the bottom "Hand Painted M Nippon", which is one the better factories. With the mark "Nippon", this would date this piece, being made between 1891 and 1921. It measures 8" across the top, 2 5/8" across the bottom and is 4 7/8" high. It is in great condition with no damage.
