This is a Wonderful Treasure that has been in our personal collection for over 30 years. This Silver Cup has a beautiful Gilt French Vermeil on the outside as well as the inside of this drinking vessel. It is marked dating it from 1819 - 1838 with: 1. The maker's mark : a lozenge with three Letters or three Star Symbols in it. 2. The mark indicating fineness: it has a mark for Paris and .950 silver / Man's Head with the number 1 by his mouth in the lower right hand corner ( 1st Titre designating the highest level of silver content ). 3. The Guarantee Mark: Grosse Garantie / Paris. This information on the French Marks is in the "International Hallmarks on Silver Collected by Tardy" on page 193.
The very finely detailed and executed style of this lovely Cup has beading about midway (1") down the bowl of the cup with a continual leaf design on the foot in two rows about 3/8" apart. The Cup is 3" across and is 2 1/2" tall to the start of the foot and the foot is 2" across and is 1 1/4" tall and is slightly out of round on the bottom foot. The Handle is 4 3/8" following the curve of the handle from the top of the cup / start of the handle to the end of the handle and 1 3/4" measuring start down from the top of the cup to the end of the handle. The finely detailed and decorated handle has a great symbolic Warrior's Head wearing a Helmet and close to the end of the handle, is it looped around to a Heart shaped Leaf and finally joins the cup. The French Gold Vermeil is in wonderful condition as well as the cup itself, other than a very few tiny little dings that are hardly noticeable at all.
