This Ladle is an original 1903 Sterling Silver Frank Smith Lion Ladle. This is not the new re-issued Lion by Wallace. We have other pieces of this pattern in our Hill and Hill Store. Type "LION" in the search box at the top left side of this page to see what we have. This is a very popular pattern today as well as in the past due to its uniqueness in design. There is no other figural pattern by any other Silver Company that had a design that was considered even close. It has a full body lion figure that is figural around the front and back and even has the Lion's Tail wrapped around the handle. This Gravy Ladle measures 6 1/2" straight measuring from tip to edge of bowl and weighs 84 grams. It is in excellent condition and has never been monogrammed. It has a near mint Gold Washed Bowl and the Original Frank Smith Marks. The old original Lion Pattern has the old Trademark of Frank W. Smith Co. Inc. The old Trademark has a Crescent Moon with an " S " intertwined in the moon and has the Lion standing up on the moon, along with Sterling PAT 1902. The new reissued pieces of Lion pattern are marked "Wallace Silver Co. " and do not have the wonderful detail of the figural Lion wrapped around the handle. If you look on sites of " Silver Matching Services ", they will list the old "Lion" pattern Frank W Smith Company as Old Estate Silverware. And will list the new "Lion " pattern by Wallace Silver Company as New Silverware. We have 3 pieces of " Old " Lion Pattern by Frank W. Smith : RL-3016 Lion Pie Server / RL-3017 Lion Sugar Shell Spoon / RL-3015 Lion Gravy Ladle with a Gold Finish in the Bowl ( this Gold Finish was only applied a long time ago (1900's -1920's) and cost extra ). The old fancy monograms are not even hardly done as it has become almost a lost art nowadays. The Pie Server that has a silverplated Blade over " steel " has not been done since the 1910's or earlier.
