Vintage Russian lacquer box, illustrating the epic poem Ruslan and Ludmila, by Pushkin.
Ruslan is depicted on his horse, blowing on a curved horn, with a castle in the background. The colors are muted, indicating a night scene. This is verified by the presence of an owl, finely painted in gilt in the lower left quadrant. Beautifully painted, with wonderfully fine detail in the horse and the figure of Ruslan. I had to examine this with a 10X magnifier to really appreciate the detail.
This is a larger box, as these Russian miniature lacquer boxes go, measuring 5 3/4" x 4 1/4" x 1 1/2" high.
The writing says "Ruslan and Ludmila," I am told by my Russian speaking friend.
Excellent used condition, save for crazing on the lid, which is shown in the photos.
