This is a wonderful circa early 19th Century American schoolgirl work box.
The box is hand dovetailed. It is decorated all the way around with a double outline and what appear to transfer print scenes of American eagle shields, angels, sailboats, paddlewheelers, and a great early scene of firefighters battling a burning building.
The brass handle, which has wonderful patina, appears to be original, as do the lock and hinges. Nice to find an early box like this in all original, untouched condition.
Overall very good condition. One back corner has some separation, shown in a closeup. Modest surface wear, particularly on the top.
Measures 11 1/2" x 7 7/8" x 5" high, exclusive of the handle.
