19th Century French Faience Sauceboat
Very unusual and attractive early 19th Century French faience sauceboat. This came with an old dealer's tag that reads "French Faience Empire Sauce Boat 1800 - 1830 $485." I believe the attribution and dating to be quite accurate. In researching the piece I was able to find two French Empire silver sauceboats of similar shape and also with a dog head finial, that were hallmarked for the period 1809 - 1835. This wonderful sauceboat copied what must have been very expensive silver examples in a delightfully folky manner. To my eye, this piece is much more special.
The condition is very good, with the usual glaze imperfections one finds on early faience pottery.
About 8 3/4" long by 6" high, including the handle. Unmarked.
