Spectacular and massive Beatrice Wood vase.
Beatrice Wood, the "Mama of Dada," lived a long life as an iconoclast and creative genius. Her pottery is both masterful and unique.
This is a really large vase, measuring 8 3/4" tall by 6 1/8" diameter. I've shown it with a bottle of beer next to it, just to get an idea of the scale. The vase is beautifully thrown, with an undulating surface that highlights the beautiful glaze.
The glaze is wonderfully controlled, with wavy veins of color on a background of variegated olive, rust. The waves of color include a light yellow and a sea blue. The color looks almost foamy, as if it was sprayed on. Perhaps it was.
This vase would be spectacular in a mid century modern interior, and would make a worthy addition to any collection of studio or arts and crafts pottery.
