American sailor art knotted twine basket.
Here is a rare nautical / folk art collectible. This type of hand knotted twine basket is believed to have been made by sailors and is associated with the New England whale hunting vessels. Examples are quite hard to come by.
This is a well made basket, made from muted salmon/pink colored twine. The basket has a ten sided base. The basket starts out round, then rises and flares into a wide rim with 10 points. All of this is topped off with a nicely shaped handle. There is a ribbon woven into the rim which is most likely not original to the basket.
The basket measures approximately 11 1/2" across the rim and 9" high including the handle.
The condition is excellent, with some staining to the base. The handle is intact but leans to one side.
