Beautifully decorated 18th Century porcelain plate attributed to Tournay (sometimes spelled Tournai).
The Tournay factory made soft paste porcelain in the mid 18th Century. At the time, Tournay was under French rule, today it is Belgium.
This plate is hand painted under the glaze with floral sprays in a lovely dark blue.
The plate measure 9 5/8" diameter and is in excellent condition.
There is a mark, which I cannot find in any of my books. Tournay was known to use workman's marks, so perhaps that is what this mark is. The plate was deaccessioned from the Birmingham Museum of Art and has a museum number. The plate was attributed to Tournay, mid 18th Century.
In any case, it is a beautiful example of antique Continental soft paste porcelain.
