Beautiful English porcelain compote, circa 1850, hand painted with a scene which is named on the back of the compote.
Balcarres Craig is in Fife, Scotland, and has wonderful view of one of my favorite place names in the world, the Firth of Forth. Balcarres House - Folly, the structure on the hill was built around 1820, and is a historical landmark in Scotland.
No manufacturer's mark; likely candidates are Rockingham, Coalport and Davenport. The quality of the piece, with a superb and detailed hand painted scene, and exquisite gilding, point to one of the top makers.
Excellent condition, no chips, cracks or hairlines, just a bit of scratching in the ground color. There are a few tiny dark specks which are "in the making." The gilding is amazingly intact for a piece of this age.
Measures 12" x 8 3/4" x 2" high.
