This pretty oil on cardboard depicts an uncommon and curious scene : a young girl, standing on a chair in front of a fireplace arranging a rosary around a crucifix. Her outfit, with her white cap, apron and shawl tied around the bust ,indicates that she is probably a young peasant in Sunday dress. She also wears thin shoes and not clogs.
We can perfectly see the religious fervor in her eyes.
The painting is in rather dark tones, perfectly rendering the atmosphere inside the farms at the 19th century.
It is signed and dated on the lower left side : E. Chauvin ? 1863 .
The painting has a rounded shape in the corners and except for a small scratch at the top it is in good condition.
It is surrounded by its original gilded stuccoed frame,
Unfortunately,a piece is missing in the upper right corner and there are some lacks of stucco in several places.
This frame would deserve to be restored.
The cardboard is reinforced at the back by two pieces of wood which stiffen it.
Dimension : 14,2’’ x 12’' framed (36cm x 30cm)
11,5’’ x 9’’ for the painting (29cm x 23cm)
It is a really interesting little painting, and full of charm.
