Here is a beautiful example of European folk art work during the 18th century.
This beautiful and very expressive cherub head is certainly from northern Italy or southern Germany.
It’s carved out a single piece of wood with a lot of details, especially the hair, with a great expression very well rendered thanks to the polychromie.
This head is certainly a part of a more important piece, maybe a large religious sculpture. The unfinished back means it was intended to be hung.
It’s in very good antique condition, just some minor lacks of paint on the top head and few scratches on the face.Nothing important, but the painting is ancient and fragile and can easily detach.
Dimensions are about : 7,2’’ x 5,3’’ x 5,1’’ ( 18,5 x 13,5 x 13cm )
A really beautiful antique decoration piece!
