These are two interesting and nice pieces from French domestic folk art of the late 19th century.
The string holder was used at the kitchen or at the butcher’s to tie the pieces of meat.
This one is made of hardwood, probably boxwood. It’s complete, with its blade on the small metal support fixed on the lid which allows to cut the string ( it still cuts very well ! ).
A small hole finished by a wooden ring allows the string to get through.
Except some very small accidents on the wood on the inside edge of the lid, please see photos, this antique item is in good condition with a beautiful patina.
Dimensions : 4,7 inches height ( 12cm ) and 6,6 with the blade ( 16,7cm ),lid diameter is about 5,5 inches ( 14cm ).
The covered wooden jar is very elegant and in good condition ,it’s also made of turned hardwood with a nice warm color.Maybe was it used in pharmacies?
In all cases it’s a very decorative ancient object easy to put anywhere in your home.
It’s about 7 inches height ( 17,7cm ) and the lid diameter 4,3 inches ( 11cm )
