This pretty unsigned painting from the end of the 19th century depicts a cow drinking in a river lined with tall trees.
The atmosphere of undergrowth,a little dark,is very well rendered.
We can guess the presence of sun thanks to the visible shadow of the trees on the grass.
In the foreground the little cow quenches herself in this peaceful environment.
The scene is painted on a thick wood panel bearing at the back the maker’s mark, hard to read because there is a strange man’s head partly painted on it . A curiosity !
The painting is surrounded with a pretty golden stucco frame, probably the original one.
Please note some lacks of stucco in places ,a little hole at the top and some small stains on the gilded.
There is an old paper label stuck at the bottom of the frame.
Dimension : 14,6’’ x 11,4’’ framed (37cm x 29cm)
10,2’’ x 7,1’’ sight (26cm x 18cm)
A charming and interesting ancient painting
