A lovely charm from the late Victorian period, c1890. The charm is made from 9ct rose gold and is made in the shape of a barrel. The charm is in fact a vinaigrette, with a locket opening at one end and a grill at the other. The locket opening would have allowed the owner to put a sponge inside the barrel that would have smelt of perfume, emanating from the grill. Perfume, and consequently vinaigrettes, were a sign of status due to the fact that perfume was very expensive and afforded only by the higher classes. This is a lovely example and would make a pretty addition to any charm collection.
