This is a very interesting pair of Lion Shaped Bookends from the end of the 19th century originally coming from the former French colony of Gabon (This latter became independent in 1960 as most of the French colonies in Africa). Each is sculpted from a single piece of Okoumé wood (typical from the era, which is soft and easy to sculpt with an original reddish tan) and highlighted with eyes, teeth and claws made from bones. Minor scratches and dents can be seen due to the age. Books not included. Circa date 1890. Dimensions 6”high/ 6 ½”wide/ 5”deep.
