Here is an early nineteenth century paisley-print, hand-pieced tapestry from India. The sections were cut and re-pieced to avoid British laws of the period, forbidding the manufacture and sale of these tapestries in India (where they originated). Instead, copies were woven in Paisley, Scotland, and imported to India. Hence the name, Paisley. This tapestry is in excellent original condition. The pieces from which it is formed are woven and embroidered by hand, and then pieced by hand. There is minimal damage, carefully conserved rather than repaired (there is a patch underlying the black center, which has become thin over time). This piece is not perfectly square, nor does it lie perfectly flat. But it measures approximately 74" X 76." There is no moth damage. The piece is clean and ready to add to your collection. It really is quite magnificent and would make an excellent hanging.
