This large, older Mexican brooch tests sterling silver but is not marked with metal content. The markings read "Prieto We Juarez Co Mexico D.F." From the style of safety catch, it dates from between 1930 and 1947. It is hollow but still weighs 33.6 grams. This brooch has that distinctive native artisan look with the recessed areas of the leaf acid treated so that they will remain black. There is a lovely 3/4" X 1" pale green jade cabochon stone bezel-set below the leaf. Workmanship is good, there is a patina of age, and the condition is excellent. The pin measures 4" X 1 5/8" wide by 1/4" thick. It makes a statement.
