Dating from around the turn of the twentieth century, this pretty silver container would have held matches and been carried in a gentleman's vest pocket. Many gentlemen smoked cigars or a pipe, and this was before cigarette lighters were invented. This one is fancy repousse work. A large oval open area, intended for a monogram, is on either side of the case. The lid is hinged. There is a strike-surface on the bottom. The container is marked "sterling" and "W&D" on the inside of the lip. The manufacturer was Whiting & Davis, known as well for its mesh handbags. The condition is excellent. This match safe weighs 13 grams and measures 2 1/2" X 1 3/16" X 3/8" thick. It will hold kitchen matches. Keep it on the fireplace mantle.
