This lovely sterling silver box has a hinged lid; when opened, one can see the marks "sterling 925" on the rim. Its function is to hold matches. A gentleman carried one of these in his vest pocket; it was handy if he wished to smoke a pipe or cigar. On the bottom of the container is a striking surface. The design of this match safe is Art Nouveau, ca. 1900, and quite lovely, with its scrolls and feathers. It is in excellent original condition. It measures 2 1/4" X 1 1/4" X 3/8" thick and weighs 12.8 grams. Keep it on your mantel with matches in it to light the fire of an evening.
