This gorgeous quilt dates from between 1865 and 1890. The red patches are turkey red (a dye that was not made after 1900). This quilt is in excellent condition with no breaking of the the fabrics and no fading. The white has darkened with age. If washed, this quilt should be professionally washed to preserve its pristine condition. The hand quilting, averaging 11 stitches per inch, is a different floral design in each white area. The piecing was done by hand as well, except for the long seams, which were done on a sewing machine. The tiny binding was created by rolling the backing over to the top side and blind-stitching it. The quilt is 86" square; it is shown on a full-sized bed. It will lay nicely over the top of a queen bed, or it may be used over a table. The quilt was discovered in the Chicago area. This piece would be lovely to put out at Christmas.
