What a pretty flock of butterflies decorate the top of this quilt! The butterfly fabrics are all floral prints from the early twentieth century. Black embroidery gives their wings definition and adds eyes and antennae. The bright Nile Green stripes outlining the butterflies are just the right touch to suggest a garden. This Depression-Era (ca. 1930-1950) quilt is made of 100% cotton fabrics. It may be washed in the washing machine and dried in the dryer. The quilt is in excellent, original, never-washed (or used) condition. The backing and white areas have darkened slightly with age but will whiten with washing. The applique work and embroidery are all done by hand. The long seams are machine pieced. The quilt is nicely hand-quilted at 7-8 stitches per inch. It has no binding but is finished by hand on the back. The quilt is photographed on a full-sized bed; it measures 78" X 86."
