From prominent Mexican silversmith Antonio Castillo, a student of Spratling, comes this vintage brooch of "Azteca Mosaico" with a Zodiac (Aries) motif. The piece dates from the 1940's. The 1 1/2" round brooch is of good weight (18.6 grams). The surface is comprised of turquoise, jade, and lapis chip inlay around an abstract, silver-outlined leaping ram. The surface of the brooch has been lacquered to protect it, and most of the lacquer is intact. At the top, a decorative bail allows a chain to be added. The markings include "Los Castillo," Taxco," registry mark 15, #114, "Azteca Mosaico," sterling," and "Made in Mexico." There is a functional safety catch. This interesting vintage brooch is in excellent original condition.
