This beautifully constructed, hand-woven basket is from the late nineteenth century and was woven here in the United States. It is in a traditional form; a modified "buttocks" shape. The bottom is somewhat more rounded than many but the construction is the same. There is a steamed and bent ash circle forming the handle and bottom. The splint is obviously hand-shaved. The rim of the basket is also a steamed and bent ash splint. The basket is entirely woven from ash splints; the staves are graduated to form the body; narrower splints are woven around them. The basket is sturdy but does have some missing splints; the damage is shown in the photographs. It measures 10" long, 9 1/2" long, 5" deep, and 9" tall. The basket has aged to an attractive medium brown color.
