This elegant quilt, ca. 1875, is in excellent, never-used condition. It has been carefully washed, using no bleach or other laundry aids, and is clean although slightly stained in three areas. There are brown fold lines on the back. The stained areas, one of which is photographed, are from dye bleed. There is a paper sewn to one corner identifying the maker and date, Rachel Temple Sankey, in 1875, and an embroidered name and date as well. This quilt came from a Chicago area collection that has been in storage for over 40 years. The workmanship is expert with quilting at 12-15 stitches per inch and all piecing, including the long seams, done by hand. A photograph shows hearts (love) quilted into this quilt. It is 78" X 85" in size, exceptionally large for the era, and is shown on a full-sized bed. It 100% cotton and hand-washable.
