Dating from the late Victorian Era, around 1880-1890, this gold-filled brooch shows the layered construction of that period. The concave layers sit one atop the next, the upper layers being smaller. The top layer is a single prong-set rose-cut garnet. The next layer down has arrow-head shaped cut garnets; the one beneath that has very small garnets; the bottom layer has larger ones in a mixture of shapes. The pin is 1/2" thick. All garnets are original and in fine condition. The pin's gold layer is in good shape also. The original fittings have been skillfully replaced; a safety clasp has been added. This fancy star-shaped pin is 1 3/4" in diameter. The layered construction has openings that allow light underneath to highlight the garnets.
