This bright, shiny, carved black bar pin is made of jet, or hard coal. Jet is sometimes called "black diamond." This pin dates from around 1880-1890. Black jewelry such as this pin was worn in mourning; Queen Victoria popularized black jewelry during her reign from around 1840-1900. This pin has brass fittings that are of the period; C-catch and tube hinge. The pin is in very fine original condition with only one flake off a corner on the top of the pin. The pin measures 2" long, 7/16" wide and 7/16" thick. There are no marks but the pin was probably made in England.
