This small silver box with a hinged lid originally held matches. It would be worn attached to a gentleman's watch chain. Pipe and cigar smokers would find it quite useful. There is a striker on the bottom. This sterling silver box has English hallmarks. One side has a shield in the center which was intended for a monogram. There is no monogram on this safe, but there is a small dent. The back has an engraved floral decoration that continues onto the lid. The quality and workmanship are excellent. This estate box probably dates from around the turn of the 20th century. The only condition issue is the dent previously mentioned. The box measures 1 1/2" square and is 1/4" thick. It weighs 20.4 grams. It is elegant enough for a lady to wear on a chain around her neck. It could hold pills or other small items.
