This oval, hand-wrought Victorian silver locket is of cast construction. There are no marks, but it tests sterling. It is of American origin, dating from before 1892, before it was required that pieces be marked as to silver content. The front of this flat locket is decorated with a raised design of criss-crossed branches that may be a monogram or just an interesting naturalistic design. There is a fancy engraved border around the perimeter as well. The back of this locket is engraved with three vertical panels of leaves. There is an empty shield at the bottom for the addition of a monogram. Inside, the locket has both bezels to hold photographs. The locket is 1 5/8" X 1 1/4" X 1/4" thick. There is a large bail to accomodate a heavy Victorian chain or cord. This locket is in excellent original condition. It easily snaps open and closed. It weighs 12.3 grams.
