Here is a carved Victorian (ca. 1875-1900) brooch in a black material called "bog oak." Bog oak is oak wood harvested from a bog and painted black. The pin is probably English; a bog is an English swamp. This pin is 3/8" thick and nicely carved with a central floral medallion; the center flower is surrounded by leaves; the oval shield is raised and decorated with carving. The edge of the pin is serrated and decorated with piercings. There is a spot on the back where the paint is gone and the wooden material of the pin can clearly be seen. The clasp is an archaic brass one held to the pin with tiny screws. There is a tube hinge and C-clasp. This old pin is in excellent original condition. It measures 1 1/2" across by 1 1/8" high by 3/8" thick. There are no markings.
