Here is a very pretty amber bead necklace measuring 20" long. Amber is very lightweight, so this necklace is comfortable to wear. The beads range in size from 1/8" X 1/4" to 1/4" X 3/4." The beads range in color from yellow to brownish red. Some beads are clear, some are opaque, and some are partially opaque. The lighter, yellowish beads are called "butterscotch" and are generally opaque; they are mined from the icy waters of the Baltic Sea. The clear, reddish brown beads are mined in the normal way. The material is a natural resin; it is petrified tree sap. This accounts for the many variations in size and color. These beads have been polished smooth. The piece has an attractive screw clasp reminiscent of the Depression Era, but this necklace is modern, perhaps 20-25 years old. It is in excellent original condition. It has no marks, but it originated in one of the countries around the Baltic Sea, probably Poland or Russia.
