This creamy white woolen coverlet is very soft and fine and of cashmere quality. The origin of the wool is uncertain. The coverlet is 64" wide and consists of two 32" panels very carefully pieced together by hand in the center. The motifs are birds and flowers in the Indian style; the woolen crewel embroidery is also in the style of India, fashionable during the early nineteenth century. There are many soft colors used and beautiful stitching. Each figure is different. The piece is signed at the bottom "L C No 1." The piece has brass rings sewn along the top for hanging. The length is 84," allowing it to fit a twin bed. This piece is naive; it is American; it is all hand-worked; it dates from the early nineteenth century. There are many tiny meticulous darns on this piece, showing that it was treasured and well-cared for. The piece is from a Chicago area estate but was probably collected in New England.
