This quilt, with its multi-colored printed cottons and black accents, was made sometime between 1930 and 1950. It is in excellent original condition. The design is called "Fan Patchwork" or "Fanny's Fan." The fans march across the field of the quilt in rows; the maker has them turned first one way and then the opposite, giving movement to the unexpectedly graphic design. The addition of the black fabric adds drama to the pattern, as does the quilting, which follows the design. The blocks themselves are hand-pieced but machine-stitched together; the quilting is by hand at seven-eight stitches per inch. The quilt is machine-washable in cold water and may be dried in the dryer on cool. It fits a twin bed, measuring 66" X 80." This quilt is from a Chicago area collection formed during the 1980's and 1990's. It has been carefully stored and remains pristine.
