This quilt is a masterpiece of hand quilting. It is completely covered in hand quilted designs including pineapples, the symbol of hospitality. The quilting is 12 stitches per inch. This quilt is about as thick as a mattress pad, allowing the quilting to stand out in relief. It is quite large, 86" X 100," and was made for a large, four-poster bed. The two rear corners have cut-outs for the bed-posts. It dates from between 1865 and 1890, probably earlier rather than later. The fabric is fine white cotton. The quilt is in excellent overall condition but there is some wear and yellowing on the top edge. It is worse on one side than the other (the worst is shown in the photographs). There is one small stain on the back. Quilts such as these were made to commemorate a young woman's wedding, usually were worked on only by the bride and her family, and were used only on special occasions.
