This masterfully sculpted figure of a seated scholar with scroll is captivating! The old man has a calm countenance and a penetrating gaze. The sculptor seems to have captured his subject's essence.
Measuring a very displayable 11 1/2" size it is in fine condition. Quite heavy. A kind viewer has helped to identify this as being Japanese Kutani. There are two impressed character marks on the textured base (last photo).
The vivid blue and white kimono is in contrast to his unglazed brownish skin of his face and hands. The close-up photo of his face is textured in such a manner that from just a short distance away, you will see 'wrinkles' in his skin.
Excellent condition.
