Laden with many signs of positive symbolism, images of the smiling or laughing Buddha have become sought after objects to bring balance, happiness, prosperity, and sometimes even fertility to a household!
Chinese folklore has it that in his wake, a wondering monk brought all things good to those who looked upon him favorably. His image is found in both Chinese and Japanese objects of art (known as Hotei in Japan).
Here Buddha is surrounded by 9 adorable and playful children holding sweets and gold he gave them. His mission is to be a protector of the weak, the poor and all children.
Because of these traits, statues like this are very often incorporated into homes practicing the art of feng shui to assure luck, abundance, happiness, success, good health, and practically anything else good you could hope for.
This one is highly unique because of its size and the fact that there are 9 children instead of 5. Odd numbers are considered lucky.
It measures approx. 17 1/2" high x 11" wide by 9" deep. 15-20 pounds.
No identification of maker or age marked on the base. Chinese characters on front of piece may reveal more information to someone wh can translate them. Post 1912 - likely post 1950s.
As an aside - search as you may but it's not likely you'll find another with 9 kiddies!!
