This pendant displays an abundance of lustrous, rainbowlike color. This mother of pearl item is carved on both sides - each one with different images.
Very likely this piece was a bridal piece. One side depicts two Mandarin ducks floating on a pond with lotus. The ducks are shown floating along with one duck with a turned head looking at the other duck. A pair of Mandarin ducks symbolizes love, marriage, happiness, and fidelity.
The other side is framed by two phoenix birds in the clouds. When the two are shown together, they are said to draw the energies of yin and yang in an effort to create the perfect balance, which in turn will bring great happiness. There are Chinese symbols (probably good luck) symbols in the center.
The piece measures 2" x 1 1/2". At the center top is carved a bar that serves as a bail and ready to receive a chain or ribbon chain.
