This is a wonderful mutton-fat jade, devil's work carving from the late 18th or early 19th century.
This carving would make a stunning pendant. Please note that we have another for sale which while purchased from the same individual at the same time, varies significantly in design, thickness, weight (the last photo shows them side by side). This one has a butterfly motif. It weighs approx. 3.5 gm.
It is a wonderful and intricate example of what has become known as 'devil's work' carving due to the artful and tireless effort needed to create it. The carving has 3 components, each of which is free moving as it is carved out of a single piece of jade. The flat surfaces of the pendant are also carved and pierced. The pendant is 1 3/4" long x 3/4" wide and 1/4" deep.
