This Volkstedt German plaque, ca. early 1890s, is fabulous! The 3-dimensional, bas relief figures includes angels, a dolphin (sea creature), a beautiful semi-nude, and an ornate baroque rim.
Under the winged angel's head mounted on top and center, the beautiful semi-nude woman rides the waves lying in a shell boat, while a dolphin propels her forward and another angel strews flowers ahead of her. The beautiful woman's breasts are bear and her diaphanously draped bottom half floats around her as does a long piece of the fabric which she waves above her. This and the roiling, foaming waves help to create the feeling of movement and makes this particular composition very appealing and dynamic.
Remarkable that every facet has survived in such fine condition for at least 120 years! On the back is the Volkstedt mark (without the word 'Germany' in blue which indicates an early date).
It measures approx. 10 3/4" x 7 1/2" x 1 1/2".
The color is the most desirable one - medium 'Wedgwood' blue color.
The condition is excellent. Other than a bit of grime and dust, it is in 'mint' condition.
NOTE: If you like this plaque then you will probably like the planter with the same subject but in a different form and with different colors (See item twt3212. This plaque is very, very fine, and the planter is very, very rare!
