Over the years we have seen these Chinese silver objects referred to as a thimble holder, a snuff box, or an etui (for sewing implements). As a box, it can have an unlimited number of purposes and with the bail, can be worn in any number of ways - on a chain as a pendant or even as a large charm on a bracelet.
The colorfully enameled googly-eyed fish are usually referred to as koi but are actually a type of fancy, fantail goldfish that the Chinese bred over many years and are highly prized.
Here they are depicted in deep jewel tones swimming amidst fern-like seaweeds.
The enamel work is on a gold-washed silver, mesh-like background. The gold-wash is vibrant as well. It is marked 'silver' on the bottom. The hinge works very well and it has a light 'snap' to it when closed.
Approx. 1 3/4" high x 1 1/8" in diameter around the middle.
Top notch in every way. Excellent condition.
