This newly acquired butterfly pin and is by David-Andersen in the large size, 2 3/8". It features distinctive turquoise and gold contrasted with a touch of yellow and white. The wings have a very 'stained glass' appearance because of the black outlining. The segments of the body are mostly gold with black towards the top. The eyes are turquoise.
As a bit of background...
Along with contemporaries, Marius Hammer of Bergen, Norway (Andersen was from Oslo) and others from other lands (Tiffany, Faberge to name just two) David Andersen founded and led the field in beautiful enamel and other silver works. He lived from 1843-1901. His company was founded in 1876 and by 1892 he opened a second shop. Following his death, his son Arthur took over and the company is still in operation today. The success of the designs and wares of the David-Andersen company has become synonymous with many types of enamel wares including jewelry, utensils, and figural salt and pepper sets. A variety of hallmarks were used over the years with two in use since 1925 which makes it very difficult to specifically date.
Also, the technique used to create these multi-color David-Andersen butterfly pins is to apply transparent coats of multi-color enamel on a 'guilloche' ground (a machine-engineered pattern in the metal that in this case, depicts the veining found in nature).
The surface of this pin is very glossy (thus some 'flares' from the camera) which gives it a liquid-y appearance. It is in excellent condition with the gold wash over the sterling silver providing beautiful contrast to the enamels. If one didn't know better, you'd think it was solid gold! Please note that in the enlarged closeup you can see that in the 3rd segment of the body there is a dark spot that could be misconstrued as a chip - it is not - it is just a variation in the enamel.
We have many butterfly pins by other makers such as Marius Hammer, and John Atkins & Sons, so please make sure to search them out here in my shop.
