This Volkstedt plaque dates from ca. 1896-1904. The frame dates from 1943-63 (based on a label that was still attached to the back of another framed plaque we purchased at the same time. That label showed that it was framed in Philadelphia with a single postal code which allows us to date the frame firmly in that 20 year period).
We have had and sold plaques with this subject matter several times over - in different colors and forms, but never framed in a shadowbox like this one! Of all the plaques we have had the pleasure to offer for sale, the subject of the lovers, is our best seller as (apparently) it has the most universal appeal.
Both the plaque and the frame are in excellent condition.
The frame measures 15 1/2" square and is 2 1/2" deep. The background is a black velvet. It has been very expertly and securely mounted in this shadowbox. The backing paper was removed to reveal the Volkstedt sunburst Germany hallmark. (The paper was already removed when we bought it).
The last photo shows this plaque alongside the other one framed in the same type of shadowbox and purchased at the same time. The smaller one is the one that had the label still affixed. It is listed separately (if still available).
