Ooooh my!! This banded agate cameo is extraordinary in several ways.
Let's start with the setting. The beautifully carved cameo is set in a 15K gold bezel with diamond accents on both the top and bottom ornamentation. Keep in mind that many of these hardstone cameos were done as mourning cameos during the Victorian era, but this is significantly different. Diamonds instead of pearls and a tri-color piece of agate that goes from the white portrait to its rose-ish/blueish blush background color to the rust colored back layer.
The carving of the cameo is so masterful - every hair and every facial feature is very finely wrought. It is in high relief.
The height is just a bit under 2" at 1 /78". The width is 1 3/8". Large by most standards. Gold is not marked, but it was tested.
We do not have a watch that is proportionally sized to suspend from the hook in the back to demonstrate how it would look, but we think you can easily imagine it!
The top ornament has been done in such a manner that a chain can be strung through it to suspend this as a pendant (as shown in first photo on a modern chain which is not included with this listing). There is a simple but heavy duty double C-clasp closure. The pin extends a tad outside the bezel which is indicative of an early setting.
The condition is exceptionally good. Note that on the back side top, there appears to have been a repair of some sort, but we cannot figure out what or why. Mentioned for thoroughness. The diamonds are rose cuts - we counted 17 of them. Under high magnification we see that on the very tip of the fleur-de-lis on the bottom, there was probably one more diamond and that that tip is broken off. So not noticeable. Look at the photos carefully. We don't think you can see it even with the closeups!
Also, it is interesting to note that because it is 15K gold we automatically thought English, but because of the fleur-de-lis, it might in fact be of French origins!
