This beautifully painted portrait of a country gentleman from possibly the Elizabethan (1558-1603) or possibly Baroque period (1600-1750) is wonderfully framed in an antique gilded gesso frame. Everyone who collects small paintings or painted plaques like this one is always searching for this type of rococo frame.
The frame measures approx. 21 " x 17 1/4". The opening (not counting the velvet matte is approx. 9" x 13" The front of the plaque showing is about 11 1/2" x 7 1/4". The actual size of the plaque is 8 1/4" x 12". There is an interior burgundy velvet inner matte. (worn as shown). The condition of the plaque is excellent. The frame has signs of wear and a couple of old repairs. For its age and fragility, it is in very, very good condition.
The plaque is artist signed 'A.Armand' as shown in photo. We were especially impressed by the masterful painting of the face. This elegant gentleman stands proudly in the forefront of his castle estate!
On the reverse side of the plaque, there are remnants of an old label and what might be an impressed KPM sceptre mark. We are not selling this as KPM as we cannot verify that it actually is by KPM.
When we purchased this plaque it was removed from the frame along with the small nails that held it in place. We used small nails to secure it in the frame but everything else is original to it.
