This very large and quite heavy porcelain charger is beautiful to us on several counts. Of course, the masterful hand painted composition and how it is divided to show two different scenes is one feature. The first scene is of an interior with a perched and (secured with a lightweight (pearl?) chain) parrot with a gorgeous hanging basket full of peonies. The scene on the right side with a mountain in the distance, appears to be a house in the middle of a roiling body of water. Intriguing, eh?
Each side is divided in the center by a visual device consisting of a climbing serpent which appears throughout. The creature maybe a fantastical one because it appears to be a cross between a Chinese chilong (baby dragon) and a sea serpent. The stylistic elements and the way it is signed on the reverse leads us to think this is of Japanese origins. Last quarter 19th century.
In amazing undamaged condition. Excellent. No chips, cracks, crazing, etc.
