This is a true phenomenon! For every 100 or more green or blue and white jasper ware plaque Volkstedt made they made one in sepia tones. This one is not only sepia-toned, but also has gold highlights and pink/blush tone accents. Extraordinary!!
In over 25 years of dealing with these types of plaques we have found only one other sepia-tone and gold finished one (we do have an unusual green planter with partial sepia and gold finish listed). Truly a rare find. We have seen only one other for sale from a California auction house about 5 years ago (different subject).
It has everything going for it - subject, size, condition, and finish. Here, a beautiful art nouveau woman complete with winged angel at her side, sits astride a large crescent moon while the night sky twinkles with tiny gold stars all around her. Instead of garlands and bunches of strewn flowers that might have been sculpted in a ground-based scene, here there are bunches of stars across her draped gown and in her hand (a few stars are chipped which is the only damage to this plaque) in this moon-lit night sky scene. Unlike the white figures on the green and blue plaques, here the facial features are defined and colored.
It measures approx. 11 3/4" x 10" x 2" deep. The condition is excellent except as mentioned in previous paragraph. The plaque is somewhat dirty but we chose not to risk breaking anything by cleaning it and will leave that up to you!
On the reverse you can see the blue Volkstedt sunburst mark without the word 'Germany' which means it is probably of the earlier manufacturing period of early 1890s. There are impressed number along the top rim near the round hanger.
The frilly border has very stylized sea-like features - one (on the right side) even looks like a fish tail complete with scales! The pink accents really elevate this plaque another notch or two!
