This bust was created in the Rudolstadt-Volkstedt area of Germany some time between 1904 and 1924 based on the hallmark on the base shown in the last photo.
In the past we had two very similar style Rudolstadt busts but they were only in the off white and gold decoration. This one is unique in that the color of her dress is glazed a deep burgundy, chocolate-y brown and the gold straps and hair ornaments are a great counterpoint. As with the other two we had, the finish on the skin feels amazingly smooth and silky to the touch - unlike any other type of porcelains we have had.
She is in excellent condition and measures 14" x 11 1/4". Her dimples are just soooo cute!! I was once told that Sarah Bernhardt of silent film fame was often used as a model for the art nouveau bust of the period but none of the photos I found of her showed dimples! So who knows who exactly this beautiful lady is, but each of us can imagine her as a distant cousin or maybe even as a sister. She certainly would make a wonderful addition to anyone's family! A star in our eyes.
The last photo shows the pair of Rudolstadt busts we sold that are mentioned above.
