To us, the scene appears as if it was out of a Shakespearean play. One can imagine the fluted column being a stage prop and the figures appearing there just to convey a certain stream of thought to further the plot.
We don't recognize the allegory or the precise scene from a specific play, but we do recognize the extraordinary mastery of this as a sculpture.
Amazingly, there are two of these pieces. When we first looked at them we thought they might be a pair of bookends, but after very close examination we realize that would not be possible. They are actually two of the same figures and each would be placed at an end of a shelf or mantlepiece at an angle.
They are very heavy. Each weighs about 16 pounds.
The marble looks like carrara - very white with just some slight gray running through it. The carving around the base, on the seat, and the column is made to look like ruins.
The two bronze birds perched atop the column are just as detailed - each feather discernable - as the main figures. Note the ball and claw feet of the table the woman on the left is leaning upon. Also, part of the pedestal of the table is adorned with a figural winged woman. The standing figure, with her hand on the first one's back seems to be consoling her. Oh, if we only knew what made her so sad!
A quality sculpture. We prefer to keep these 2 together but will list them separately for now and see what the response is for them.
Also, please be aware that we are able to list a maximum of 9 photographs. The last photo shows them together. Also, just to let you know, because of the contrast in the white marble vs the dark patina of the bronze, it was difficult to capture the detail of the bronze without washing out the details of the marble.
The base is covered with a felt pad.
The statue measures 13 1/2" x 7" x 7" and it is in excellent condition. The standing figure is loose, but is firmly and securely attached to the base.
