Mint Condition Chinese Articulated Purple Enamel Silver Googly Eye Fish with Fantail - Goldfish - Koi
Some people refer to these type of fish as 'koi' but I think they are really fancy goldfish. Either way, this particular one is simply amazing!! This fish is one of several 'new old stock' - meaning it was purchased many, many years ago as new and it remained off the market for decades. We have all come to think that these googly-eyed ones are 100 years old or so, but the person this was purchased from said he acquired it new around 60 years ago. Of course, he is over 90 years old and his warehouse is packed with antiques so it is possible that his recollection is not exactly accurate. All we know is that it is fabulous!
No marks, but it tested positive for sterling grade silver (at least 925 out of 1000 parts silver). The fish measures 3 1/4". The fan tail is 1 7/8" wide. We love that one frill on the tail tucks under, giving it a very realistic feel.
By the way...those googly eyes are sometimes called 'telescope' eyes - another very appropriate word to describe their appearance!
The enamel colors are deep purple and in the tale it is a lighter lavender to white contrasted with the orange eyes and mouth and the yellow and black accented eyes. The scales on the underbelly are white.
Nothing missing, no chips to the enamel. Really amazing!
Because the fish retains its chain and bail there are many ways to either display or wear this piece. It can be worn as a pendant, displayed on a hanger, or stood up on its fins.
