This very large enamel on gold washed sterling silver butterfly pin is a one-of-a-kind design.
The pin measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" making it very large. The deep blue enamel contrasts with the bright gold of the metal webbing and edging. The wings and eyes are studded with semi-precious stones of turquoise, carnelian, and a light green stone that we have not identified. The lower part of the body is pearlescent white enamel.
On the reverse it has a sturdy pin with a rollover safety clasp. As you will see from the construction, the maker used 2 bars to reinforce the wings making it very solid and sturdy. There is a hallmark that reads, c1992 MMA CLEO S925. To decipher, it was made in 1992 for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and sold through their gift shop. It was part of the Cleo collection and made of sterling silver. The 'S' in front of the 925 usually indicates that it was manufactured in Scandinavia - probably Norway or Denmark. Interestingly it is in a more typical Chinese style.
The pin weighs 19.4 gms.
